Grandma's Tea Cakes

My youth had its special days,

As I'm sure yours did,

But Tea Cake Day was the best,

Grandma's treat for all of us kids.
Informing us early in the day,

As she always would,

That she'd only bake them,

If we promised to be real good.
Being the angels that we were,

That was not so hard,

Especially when we were challenged,

With such a tasty reward.
Somehow, she always managed,

To get started kind of late.

I think there was a motive,

In making us, anxiously, wait.
The recipe was a secret.

She never wrote it down,

And If you ask her for it,

She would only frown.
Now that I've grown older,

I think I figured it out.

Now I'll try to disclose it,

And tell what its all about.
A full measure of patience.

A dash of discipline too.

A twist of "sense of humor",

As if that were something new.
Gently fold in some kindness.

Before placing in the oven,

Just to give more flavor,

Top with lots of loving.
