Ka-Chunk, Ka-Chunk, Ka-Chunk.

Do you remember that sound?

Ka-Chunk, Ka-Chunk, Ka-Chunk.

It's no longer, anywhere around.

A sound in my generation,

that every child had learned.

The sound of making butter,

in grandma's old crock churn.

Three gallons of clabbered milk,

and some fresh rich cream,

was transformed into buttermilk,

and the butter of your dreams.

Grandma was a master,

of getting the work done,

singing to the rythmn,

turning work into fun.

She supervised the progress,

as the grandchildren churned,

making it totally fair,

giving each of us our turn.

When the work was finished,

and the churning stopped,

and set for a little while,

the butter rose to the top.

The butter was ladled off,

then it was finally strained,

by twisting it in linen cloth,

until no liquid remained.

The buttermilk was a treat,

especially with cornbread.

My favorite time to have it,

was before going to bed.

We put butter on everything,

because it couldn't be beat.

If it didn't have butter,

it wasn't fit to eat.

Now, if you eat butter,

you've committed the gravest sin.

But, I have one question;

What kind of cow gives margarine?
