The Gift Of Light
© By Grady L. Duncan
When summer nights were mild,
and a stillness filled the air,
if our chores were done,
and we had some time to spare,
we would lay out in the yard,
under the big star filled skies,
and wait for the appearing,
of hordes of pretty fireflies.
That unique little creature,
gave us kids such delight,
that we squealed and giggled,
while playing out in the night.
We caught them when we could,
in fruit jars or pickle jugs,
and amused ourselves totally,
with those gentle little lightning-bugs.s.
When we were corralled,
and finally sent to bed,
we placed the jars of bugs
on our pillow near our head.
In the silence we would lie,
watching their twinkling lights,
And that's how we ended,
many a peaceful summer night.
Though their numbers have dwindled,
to just a precious few,
I know you would enjoy them,
just like we kids, used to do.
Take time to chase the fire-flies.
Put them gently in a jar.
Show you child God's sweet gifts,
and how delightful they really are.
Leave some for the next generation!
