The Iceman's Coming!
© By Grady L. Duncan
Do you recall those Summer days,
when the Sun was blaring down,
and the children got so excited,
when the Ice Man made his rounds.
They quickly gathered at his truck,
In hopes of finding ice-chips,
from the blocks of crystal clear ice,
to moisten and cool their lips.
In the screen door of every house,
was placed a square cardboard sign,
to let him know how much to leave,
from the street, he'd read it just fine.
Their doors were always open.
If nobody was at home that day,
the Iceman could go inside,
and deliver their ice anyway.
He would make room in the ice-box,
so the order of ice would fit,
then place the card on the table,
so they'd know he delivered it.
The ice was so clear and cold,
It would jingle inside the glass.
There was something about it's taste,
that brings memories from the past.
Then if by chance you run out,
there were Ice Houses, not far away,
with ice and other groceries,
that were open most every day.
I suppose those days have ended.
No child, now knows the joy,
Of those carefree bye-gone days,
when I was just a toe-headed boy.
